Nomination Statement

A Fellow in APA Divisions 1, General; 12, Clinical; 13, Consulting; 14, I-O; and 52, International, my training, professional practice, and scholarship have been integrative of several areas of psychology, especially I-O and clinical.

 I’ve taught and conducted research at several universities, including at Michigan, Duke Medical School, and North Texas. Since 1998, I’ve served as faculty and senior administrator at the California School of Professional Psychology (Alliant International University) where I am now Distinguished Professor Emeritus. I’ve written/edited 11 books, edited two APA-published journals and currently edit the APA Book Series “Fundamentals of Consulting Psychology.”  I’ve published over 125 peer-reviewed articles and chapters and made hundreds of presentations on six continents. Research themes include: professional ethics, career assessment and counseling, psychotherapy of work dysfunctions, and internationalism-multiculturalism. My latest book The Ethical Practice of Consulting Psychology (with Stewart Cooper).

I have held leadership roles throughout my career, particularly in high-risk start-ups and turnarounds.  I’ve been a department chair, dean, provost, acting president and president of two universities, president of two psychological societies, and a consultant to a number of organizations in the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. I understand complex organizations and how to help them be more effective.

 I have served on a number of APA boards and committees including as member of the Ethics Code Task Force, Ethics Committee, and Committee on Psychological Tests and Assessments. I’ve also served as inaugural chair of APA’s Council Leadership Team, and as Chair of the Professional Affairs, Convention Affairs Boards, the CEO’s Strategic Advisory Committee, and the Committee on Professional Practice and Standards.

 On my mother’s side I am a first-generation Latino-American, and, on my father’s side, a direct descendant of pioneers who helped settle the West. I’ve actively written and promoted diversity issues including the diversity of areas of professional practice.
